Luck of the dice meets probability for a game that’s simple and fun.

Yahtzee is an easy game to play in the classroom and can learn it virtually quickly. As students roll dice to try and match the various objective on their scorecard, they’ll need to consider probability, critical thinking, and practice smart decision making. Each time they shake the dice and roll they’ll be asked to assess their situation, which puts into focus a number of important cognitive skills.

How to Play

The object of Yahtzee is to fill up your scorecard with the highest point values per a number of different objectives. Students have 3 maximum rolls each turn to try and achieve objectives. At the top of the card are single numbers (1 through 6), which prompt players to collect that number throughout each of their 3 rolls, to total the highest value possible using only that number.

On the bottom, a series of roll-based objectives add depth to the game. Students will need to roll for things such as: 3 of a kind, 4 of a kind, full house, large and small straights, chance, and of course, Yahtzee. Yahtzee occurs when all 5 dice match!

Students alternate rolling and filling in their score card based on the objective they best fulfilled for that turn. For example, rolling 4 6s after 3 rolls could either be taken as 24 on 6s for the upper section, or 24 plus whatever the other die represented on 4 of a kind on the bottom. If no objectives can be scored, a player must take a 0 in one of their remaining spaces. Whoever has the best score after all objectives have been filled in is the winner.
